About the Artist | Paru Viswanathan
My work begins from a painter’s way of seeing, shaped by a background in physical painting and a sensitivity to tone, atmosphere, texture, and restraint. I’m drawn to quiet spaces, softened forms, and the balance between presence and absence.
Many of the paintings grow from remembered impressions rather than exact places — rain-dampened streets, fading structures, muted light, and fragments of space that linger in memory long after the details have disappeared. I’m interested in how much can be suggested through reduction and restraint.
Although I work digitally, the process remains deeply painterly. Each piece develops slowly through layering, revision, removal, and refinement. I spend a great deal of time adjusting tone, surface, edge, and balance until the image feels settled. What is left unresolved is often just as important as what is defined.
Digital tools allow flexibility and experimentation, but the decisions remain entirely my own. The work is shaped through judgement, observation, and lived experience rather than automation.
My practice sits between traditional painterly sensibilities and contemporary digital process, while remaining rooted in atmosphere, stillness, and visual presence.
